The 104th running of NASCAR’s Indianapolis 500 takes place this weekend. And like most sporting events these days, the race will take place without fans in the stands.
The event was originally scheduled to take place in May, but it was postponed due to the pandemic. This is the first time the Indy 500 will be held without spectators.
NASCAR has already held a number of races without spectators, so this is nothing new. Despite the lack of spectators, the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” is still one of the biggest races of the year.
Indianapolis 500 2020: Start time, lineup, TV radio schedule and more
The 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 will be unlike any other race in the event’s long history. First it will take place in August, three months after its normal annual date on the calendar the day before Memorial Day. Second it will be held without fans — a painful decision that Roger Penske, owner of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was forced to make as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to surge throughout Indiana and the rest of the country.
The Indy 500 has been canceled six times since the first race in 1911 — coming in stretches from 1917-18 and 1942-45 during the First and Second World Wars — but it has never been held without fans. Had the 2020 event been shelved entirely, it likely would have had long-term implications for the entire NTT IndyCar series and several of its teams.
One thing that hasn’t changed, 33 cars will still hit the Brickyard for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing and a new champion will be crowned. Here’s all the information you need to get ready for Sunday’s 104th running of the Indy 500
